When choosing a wedding venue, several key factors should guide your decision to ensure it aligns with your vision, budget, and guest experience. Start by considering the location—whether it’s convenient for you and your guests, and if it complements your desired wedding style (rustic, modern, beach, etc.).

Capacity is crucial to make sure the space comfortably accommodates your guest list. Review what’s included in the venue package, such as tables, chairs, linens, or catering, as this impacts both budget and planning complexity. Availability on your preferred date(s) is another early consideration. Also, evaluate the venue’s weather accommodations, especially for outdoor events, and check for restrictions like noise curfews or décor limitations. Finally, consider the overall ambiance, lighting, and layout—these details influence the mood and flow of your celebration.

Before starting your venue search I recommend sitting down with your partner and answer some of the following questions:

  1. What style of wedding venue are we looking for?
  2. Where do we want to get married?
  3. Do we want a big wedding or a small wedding?
  4. How many wedding guests do we want to invite?
  5. Is the outside space more important than the indoor space?
  6. Does the venue offer outdoor ceremonies?
  7. Does the venue allow dogs?
  8. Can I get ready at the venue on the morning of the wedding?
  9. Is there accommodation for guests at the venue?
  10. What is our total wedding budget, and how much can we spend on venue and catering (usually about half of your budget will go to venue and food)?

That first question is an important one, as the type of wedding venue you choose will help inform many of your wedding planning decisions, from your big day’s general vibe and theme to the ceremony and reception decor and even to what you’ll wear, and much more.

What happens if it rains?

When choosing your wedding venue, it’s essential to consider how it will accommodate rain, especially if any part of your celebration is planned outdoors. Look for venues that offer a flexible indoor options (especially for photography) or a covered area like a tent or pavilion that can serve as a backup plan.

Ensure the venue has good drainage to avoid muddy walkways or soggy lawns, and ask if they provide umbrellas or assistance transitioning guests between spaces. Accessibility is also key—make sure paths remain safe and navigable in wet conditions. Planning ahead for rain not only protects your day logistically but also gives you peace of mind no matter the forecast.
